NappiesThe Black Country produces about 4 million dirty disposable nappies every year - that's 11 thousand nappies a day! Most of these nappies are collected by the local council and disposed of at the rubbish tip. It is estimated that nappies can take up to 500 years to rot away so we really need to reduce the amount that we throw away. The Real Nappy Association estimates that, for every £1 spent on disposables, everyone in the Black Country contributes 10p in taxes to dispose of them! The total cost of this for the Black Country is estimated at about £533,000 per year. Reusable cotton nappies are very similar to disposables, convenient to use and, of course, much better for the environment. There is no need to use pins, as they have ‘Velcro’, poppers or ties to keep them in place, and the biodegradable liners are simply flushed down the toilet. These nappies come in different sizes, styles and patterns so your baby can have it’s own individual look. The nappies are 100% cotton and contain no chemicals or perfume so they are soft and gentle on babies skin. Babies are kept leak free with the help of waterproof nappy covers, which are breathable and comfortable. Why not give them a go and see how you get on. Most parents use disposable nappies because it’s convenient and they don’t have to wash them. Using a cotton nappy does mean you have to wash them but can save you money. The Real Nappy Association has calculated that savings from using real nappies for a first child alone can amount to £600. So if you want to stretch baby’s budget a bit further why not have a go with a cotton nappy?
