Lunch Boxes

School is all about making those big decisions. Like, what should I put in my packed lunch? Chances are, whatever you choose, there’ll be quite a bit to throw away at the end of it. Clingfilm, cellophane wrappers, drinks cartons, crisp bags – lunchtime is definitely rush hour for the school bins. Cutting back on lunchtime waste is really easy. It’s also a great way of raising awareness about waste in your school community. Why not organise a rubbish free Lunch Challenge? The aim is to create as little rubbish from your lunch as possible. Whoever makes the least waste is the winner!

The secret is to go for stuff that is reusable or recyclable. Avoid taking your lunch to school in a plastic bag. Go for a re-usable airtight container or even better invest in a lunchbox. You can get them with hundreds of different cool pictures and designs.
Keep the container clean and you may not even need extra wrappers for your food. Instead of taking cartons of drink to school, that you can’t reseal, look out for funky drinks bottles that you can use over and over again. Otherwise choose an aluminium drinks can that can be recycled.

Try giving individual crisp bags or biscuit mini-packs a miss. Instead wrap up small quantities of crisps and biscuits from bigger packets. An even better idea would be to set your snacks free let them roam around in your lunchbox. You will not only have happier snacks but you will save money too! If you need to wrap up food don’t use cling film use aluminium foil, which can be recycled when you’ve finished with it. Everyone knows that fruit and vegetables are really good for you, and they can be good for the environment, the leftovers can be composted at school or at home.
